Peace Land Estate, Akute, Ogun State was a scene of horror yesterday, when a human skeleton, believed to be that of a woman, was found propped up on a chair in a pastor’s house named Sunday Aremu.
It was learnt that the landlady decided to burst into the apartment to evict the man, said to be a pastor, because he owed rents.
The landlady reportedly took the drastic step after making several failed attempts to get arrears of rent that had accumulated for over a year from the man.
An eyewitness said the man’s sister went missing without any trace six years ago, fuelling insinuations that the skeleton might be that of the woman.
A photograph of the skeleton in a sitting position on a sofa showed a fully dried skeketon with clothes still on the bones.
“The woman ran out of the house and screamed, calling on people in the neighbourhood for help. The man is not married and runs one small church here,” the eyewitness said.
However the suspect, who owns a church, was said to have made some revelations about the skeleton. He alleged that it belonged to his sister. According to him, his parents had just three children – himself and two sisters. He said he lived with them in the flat. However, for sometime now, one of the sisters named Funmi has not been seen again.
When people asked about her, “he would say she went to the prayer mountain,” said the source. She, however, allegedly died since 2010 and her body was abandoned in the house.
The case has been reported to the Ogun State Police Command and the suspect arrested.
Spokesperson for the command, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the story, and identified the pastor said, “Our preliminary investigation has shown that the victim is their sister called Funmilayo Aremu. It seems the victim’s body decomposed right on the chair where it was found.
“The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hammed Iliyasu, has directed that the suspects should be transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation at the police headquarters for thorough investigation.”
